Osteoporosis Home Test

There is a urine test called Pyrilinks-D, which measures for Dpd which is a urinary marker for bone loss. This test is more sensitive than a bone density test and is less expensive. Ask your healthcare practitioner about it or go to www.directlabs.com and order the test yourself.

When bone breaks down, it produces a byproduct called Dpd which is eliminated in the urine. Significantly high levels of Dpd are found in children, in postmenopausal women due to estrogen deficiency, and in patients with diseases that have high bone turnover rates. Dpd can be used to monitor bone building therapies in postmenopausal women and in individuals diagnosed with osteoporosis.

This test has not been established to predict development of osteoporosis or future fracture risk.
